Today, I thought about my whole WordPress involvement and how I got to the position I’m currently at. If I look back, I have to say my road was pretty bumpy and filled with many obstacles. I started as a freelance WordPress user and ended up as a professional WP theme developer and Usability expert. I’m aware there is a huge community of WP theme developers out there, that probably want to sell their own work but have number of obstacles in their way (just like i did): no brand, no marketplace, lame framework, lack of WP knowledge etc…

The idea is simple, me and my team of developers would put all our efforts to develop the best possible WordPress theme framework, which other community members would use to develop their own premium themes. These themes would be marketed under our own marketplace, under our own brand. We would attract new buyers and take care of nitty-gritty, so developers would concentrate on design and creative ideas related to it. Think of it as a themeforest, just with more attention on developers needs.

1. Our part of the deal

Development of best theme framework available

Regular updates to framework, based on developers needs

Detailed developer instructions and documentation

Marketing and brand building

Huge knowledge base available to community developers

2. Theme Developers Benefits

Best framework to build upon

Top SEO within all themes

No issues with branding, payments, advertising etc.

Established customer base

Support under our own forums, with help of our experts

Developers choose pricing

3. Customer Benefits

Top quality themes

Best framework to build upon

Extended & fast support

Only top quality – buggy themes won’t have place in our community

Share your thoughts – this is still just an idea, however with your support it might get a lift

Have to say that I made the biggest mistake when I started this blog in English (BTW my native language is Slovene) as I really struggled to find my audience in vast Internet space. I assumed that there will be more readers if I choose the most wide-spread language on the net and got left empty-handed. Actually there were so little visitors at the beginning that I began thinking about quitting the whole thing. The biggest irony was that most of my visitors were from Slovenia and not foreign countries I targeted, that was quite funny really:) Maybe you are in this situation right now?

After that I should quit my blog immediately and start a new one in Slovene,…but as stubborn as I am I stuck with English as Slovenia is really small country (merely 2 millions of people) and nowhere else they speak the same language. Even now I’m struggling to find my space online but am hopping to break the ground sometimes in near future. Thus instead of learning from your mistakes pick my example and start writing for your native colleagues and don’t just assume you’ll get more exposure just because English is most widespread online language. If you’ll play this game than pick Chinese instead, you won’t be disappointed, there are 1.3 billion of them.

Pros of writing in your native language

No language barriers

You can start with your own community members

You are writing about topics closer to you (than maybe to some foreigner)

Your visitors are more loyal

Writing a blog becomes a fun thing to do

Ad money is ‘relatively’ bigger as ads are more targeted

Bonds with readers are more powerful

Nowadays stand-up comics are all questioning who will replace famous Bush on the stage. It still is their job to do so and I think all of us will need someone to replace him. Maybe it hears silly but we need someone to laugh at,…just to remind us that ‘bushism’ relay is passed to another generation:)

*

SECRETARY OF STATE: HILLARY CLINTON

Mrs Clinton, first lady from 1993 to 2001, lost a close race against Mr Obama for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.

She will now have to step down as senator for New York.

Mrs Clinton will be able to hit the ground running, given her wide experience and international contacts.

Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton clashed on some foreign policy issues during the primary campaign, and with incoming Vice-President Joseph Biden also well-versed in foreign policy, there is scope for friction within the Obama team.

DEFENCE SECRETARY: ROBERT GATES

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates will remain in charge of the Pentagon when Barack Obama takes office, at least for the first year of his administration.

Robert Gates, 65, is a former director of the CIA and was appointed Defence Secretary by President Bush in 2006. He has promoted the military surge in Iraq that has been credited with stemming violence there.

Mr Obama opposed the surge but both men are agreed on a greater focus on Afghanistan.

Mr Gates is seen as a moderate and is widely respected among both Democrats and Republicans in Congress.

His appointment would also fulfill Mr Obama’s pledge to include a Republican in his Cabinet.

TREASURY SECRETARY: TIMOTHY GEITHNER

The 47-year-old head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Timothy Geithner, was instrumental in shaping the US government’s response to the banking crisis.

He played a pivotal role in the intense negotiations which took place before Lehman Brothers went bankrupt, and also helped forge the deals involving AIG and JP Morgan.

He regularly speaks about the need for major reforms in the financial system in order to avoid further turbulence.

Before joining the Federal Reserve of New York, Timothy Geithner worked for the International Monetary Fund.

He was also the Treasury’s under-secretary for international affairs from 1999 to 2001.

HEALTH SECRETARY: TOM DASCHLE

Mr Daschle was the Democrats’ Senate Majority Leader from 2001 until 2003.

As head of the health and human services department, Mr Daschle will oversee Mr Obama’s proposed reforms to the US healthcare system, which is likely to be one of the top domestic priorities of the new administration.

Mr Obama will be hoping Mr Daschle’s long legislative experience will help steer reforms through Congress.

Mr Daschle served as a senator for South Dakota from 1987 to 2005, and was an early backer of Mr Obama’s run for the presidency.

ATTORNEY GENERAL: ERIC HOLDER

Eric Holder occupied the number two position in the Justice Department in Bill Clinton’s administration.

He was a senior legal adviser to Mr Obama’s campaign team and co-chaired the vice-presidential selection committee.

If confirmed, he would lead the administration’s efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay prison camp, a move Mr Obama has singled out as a priority.

Mr Holder, 57, would be the first African-American to occupy the position of attorney general.

One issue that may surface during confirmation hearings is Mr Holder’s controversial advice on pardons to President Clinton in 2000, on the last day of his administration.

Mr Holder told the outgoing president that he was “neutral, leaning towards favourable” about pardoning fugitive financier Marc Rich.

HOMELAND SECURITY: JANET NAPOLITANO

Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano has been picked for the post of secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

This post was created in the wake of the 11 September 2001 attacks.

As a governor of a state bordering Mexico, Gov Napolitano has wide experience on immigration issues.

She served as US attorney for Arizona and was also state attorney general.

UN AMBASSADOR: SUSAN RICE

Barack Obama’s UN ambassador, Susan Rice, will hold cabinet rank, in a sign of Mr Obama’s plan to work more closely with UN member states than the administration of George W Bush has over the last eight years.

Ms Rice worked in the Clinton administration from 1997 to 2001 but backed Mr Obama for the Democratic nomination because of his opposition to the Iraq war.

She is also an advocate of tough action to end the killing in Darfur.

Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in April 2007, she supported the idea of military action to force the Sudanese government to halt the massacres.

COMMERCE SECRETARY: BILL RICHARDSON

Bill Richardson, New Mexico governor, is no stranger to government, having served in Bill Clinton’s cabinet as Energy Secretary and UN Ambassador.

He also ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, but dropped out after poor performances in the early primary contests.

Alongside Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton, he will be third of Mr Obama’s former rivals for the nomination to enter the incoming president’s inner circle.

OBAMA HIMSELF

I mean guys name is Barrack, middle name is Hussein and last name Obama. It looks like a great recipe for laughter but it has one drawback, the fact he is black, so every joke could be somehow treated as racist.

Who will be next George W. Bush Comic Figure?

As it is to my understanding simplicity is becoming a rescue plan to all design problems.

As it is to my understanding simplicity is becoming a rescue plan to all design problems. Actually it doesn’t apply just to web design but to everything people can put together (automobiles, cellphones, dashboards etc.), even services are getting simpler. Remember the time when pop-ups were big hits and amazon introduced tabs? After that programmers implemented all sort of apps bundled into one big suite, but not because it was better, they did it (even now they do it) because they could. We became bombarded with numerous options in apps that eventually became too much to handle and now we are in era of simplicity where “one button click and all doors are opened or shut. Simple, elegant!”

Simplicity has been adopted with lightning speed ever since. Everyday people, professionals and freelancers picked the idea like champs without thinking about the impact it has on their design and usability at most. To certain point of degree idea paid off to many designs but if it is so obvious, if the need is so great, why don’t the products match the expectations?

Everyone actually misses the point. Simplicity has never been the goal. Nobody wants to give up the power, elegance and flexibility of our technologies. That simple button that opens and shuts all doors at once may be simple, but it hardly does anything. Lets look at iPhone for instance. If iPhone only had one button that would do almost all operations at once it would certainly be very simple, but… all somebody could do with it would be to turn it on or off and that’s it. Where is the fun in that? Also, why does WordPress implement so many features in their blogging platform? Surely nobody uses all those shiny buttons. Have to say that simplicity is beginning to miss the point.

Is anybody smelling a conflict here? We all want more and more features, we need everything there is to it. I mean more features the better product becomes. But as the number of features increases, simplicity goes down. To that extend people want devices with extra features and on the other hand cry out for simplicity. Features versus simplicity: are these two really in serious conflict? By standard measures, yes.

Now what have we learned? We want devices that do a lot, but that do not confuse, do not lead to frustration. Ahah! This is not about simplicity: it is about frustration. The entire debate is being framed incorrectly. Features is not the same as capability + Simplicity is not the same as usability = Simplicity is not the answer.

Is Desing the Rescue Plan?

Good design can rescue us from complex features and bundle them into sustainable and usable product. How do we manage complexity? We use a number of simple design rules. Dan Norman has three simple principles up his sleeve that can transform an unruly cluster of confusing features into a structured, understandable experience: modularization, mapping, conceptual models.

Modularization

It means taking an activity and dividing it into small, manageable modules. That’s how well-designed multifunction printers, scanners, copiers, and fax machines do it: Each function is compartmentalized by grouping and graphics, so each is relatively simple. HP invented a common control mechanism (their “Q” control) so the same principles governed usage of all functions. Learn to do one function, you then know how to do all of them.

Mapping

Good mapping is essential to ensure that the relationship between actions and results is apparent.

Conceptual models

But most important of all is to provide an understandable, cohesive conceptual model, so the person understands what is to be done, what is happening, and what is to be expected. This requires continual, informative feedback, which can also be done in such a way as to be pleasurable: see any Apple product.

Emotional design is critical to a person’s enjoyment of a product, the most critical variable here being the need to feel in control. This is especially important when things go wrong. The key is to design knowing that things go wrong, thereby ensuring that people will understand what is happening and know what to do about it.

The argument is not between adding features and simplicity, between adding capability and usability. The real issue is about design: designing things that have the power required for the job while maintaining understandability, the feeling of control, and the pleasure of accomplishment.

This post is summarized article from Dan Norman and his look at Simplicity as the answer to future need for usability.

As you probably know right know, blogging is hard business so don’t take anything for granted. Becoming a successful blogger is not as easy as many think so keeping focus on mainstream problems is very difficult. Thus I’ve done a short study to find out which are top ingredients that make a blog successful:

Content

What you type is still one of the most important things you do when you blog. Actually it is the most important of all four ingredients but still depends heavily on each one of them. The basic purpose of blogging is about its content so try to focus on your words and concentrate on quality.

Design

If you don’t have looks than your content makes no sense. Still, don’t mix great design with beautiful one as it’s not the same thing. Great design is also usable as beautiful may overlap good content.

Performance

Faster is better and with little errors as possible your site becomes a winner in not time. So how slow is still tolerable? If your initial load time for first time visitor doesn’t exceed 5-8 seconds on normal 1mbit connection than you’re OK. Still faster is better and faster you get better you are.

SEO

This ingredient is not at least important (as it’s placed on last place) moreover it is probably just behind great content. Of what use your blog is if nobody can read it? Thus optimizing your blog visibility to search engines is crucial if you want to spread your word to the masses.

Have to say that all ingredients are not worth anything if they don’t complement each other. Invest your time equally in all of them and you should be fine. Otherwise be a celebrity and none of this is important:)

This idea could be a winner, because there is no quality blog out there related to this topic. I’ve been searching for tips and tutorials about it but didn’t find anything usable. People still don’t have a clue what XML feeds actually are so you could easilly educate and enrapture them to discover the use of this quite mature technology.

RSS feeds? What to blog about?

Split your blog into these sections: tutorials, tooltips, examples, freebies, image library, video and about.

Make use of feeds as frequent as possible (lifestream, latest posts etc.)

Build a useful wordpress plugin as a freebie

Give away simple daily tips on useful use of feeds (automate this through other resources)

Moreover, use imagination and enjoy of course!

What are the pros of automated content via RSS feeds?

Very fast content delivery

Best solution for news streaming

Gathering content in one place

Proven technology

More and more people use it

Search enginges love it

It is generates lots of traffic

etc.

Here are some (there aren’t more…sadly) links to get you inspired:

Today I held a presentation to my faculty colleagues about Stephen Denning‘s article Telling Tales. What he says is that managers should use storytelling as a business tool in organizations.

Why the brain likes a good tale

Margaret Parkin says stories can be included in change programs in many ways, such as:

as part of a brainstorming session;

to communicate the future of an organization, clearly and enthusiastically;

to unpick a problem and offer a parallel view;

to add spice to a presentation on forthcoming changes;

as an aid to memorable learning;

to aid discussion and reflection during training sessions; and

to stimulate curiosity in a “change update” newsletter or e-mail.

Her choice of the word “brainstorming” might take on a more literal meaning as she explains:

Research shows that while listening to stories, biochemical changes take place in the brain; levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) drop and levels of immunoglobulin A rise. So listening to a story can promote relaxation.

It makes you think, doesn’t it?

When Stephen Denning was program director of knowledge management at the World Bank in the mid-1990s, he gave impressive demonstrations and made compelling arguments about the need to gather information that, at the time, was scattered throughout the organization.

Frustrated at the poor response, he told them a story about a health worker in a tiny Zambian town who needed to know something about treatment for malaria, knowledge she was able to get immediately from a web site. The World Bank’s vast array of knowledge on poverty-related issues was not available to her in the same way.

Make’s you think, doesn’t it?

was the sort of response the little story elicited, and it did make them think and change the way they approached the management of their organization’s knowledge.

Ironically, Denning’s account was later criticized by a storytelling “expert” as being somewhat pathetic, lacking in detail and “plot”, few details about the health worker, nothing about her problems and so on. To his credit, Denning rejected this particular expert’s view.He says:

The ‘maximalist’ account would be more engrossing than my relatively dry anecdote. But I had learned enough by then to realize that telling the story in this way to a corporate audience would not galvanize implementation of a strange new idea like knowledge management. I knew that in the modern workplace, people had neither the time nor the patience – remember executives’ general skepticism about storytelling in the first place – to absorb a richly detailed narrative. If I was going to hold the attention of my audience I had to make my point in seconds, not minutes.

Storytelling can be used effectively at a time when an organization is about to undergo huge changes, and when those at the top need managers and other employees to envision what the organization will be like, and their role in it, after the changes. Human nature tends to make us apprehensive, maybe downright scared, of change, with a consequent reluctance to go for it enthusiastically. In the absence of a time machine to let people see that the future organizational change is not such a bad thing after all, the nearest you can get to it is their own imagination, fired by a “story-like” explanation of what is involved.

How Does Storytelling apply to blogging?

Article It is a very useful guide for blogging too. I know much of you already arranged your blog as a one big tale of yours but think again and try to give your audience a useful tale from your experience. Sometimes that’s what they need and that is what they will read with as little pain as possible.

This question is the one that hounts me for ’bout two months now,…that is why I decided to dedicate most of the blog to the issue. In fact I will test ideas and give you some clues how they work and how to blog about them.

Here are some of them that will go down the road soon:

Blogging about current search trends in Google

This idea is now active and is under testing so keep yourself posted (RSS) about further findings. But still some details you’ll need to consider:

Specialised posts for one narrow category (a game, a movie, a celebrity, an event etc.)

Writing in your native language (not in English!)

Targeting search trends that are not in top 100 but in next 100-200

And specialisation again! You need to choose a really narrow topic of interest (Example: Blogging about a celebrity that is not in top 100 search terms)

Link: http://www.google.com/trends

Blogging about an Idea that will win the Google 10^100 contest

Your blog (if you decide to write it) can become a really huge hype as it will be bombarded with traffic that you can equip with more explanation about winning idea and those that will follow it. But still there are some things you need to know before you jump for it:

Prepare your blog (design, content, links, SEO etc.) before the winner is announced

Start writting post now and optimize it so that search engines know you

Consider that your blog can die after few months of winner annoncement, but if you keep your publics interest rate high than it could be a succes even afterwards

Start now by placing a time counter (Voting Begins on January 27th, 2009 so hurry)

Contact me for more details if you like: admin@bizzartic.com

Link: http://www.project10tothe100.com/

Blogging about Sarah Palin

No, you’re not late as there is no quality blog dedicated only to her, but still consider some of the following things:

She is ‘a lady’ so don’t use explicit content to attack her private life

Build online presence according to current news

Place a detailed research about her past activites!!! (images, videos etc.)

Don’t become a paparazzi (stockings and that kind of stuff:)

It’s better if you’re not involved in politics and that you’re party independent voter

Let your imagination guide you

*

Have to say that I wouldn’t mind making these ideas into blogs myself but I can’t do millions things at the same time so jump for it and let me know how you’re doing (if you’ll have time of course;)….and subscribe if you’re in need for other ideas in the future.

*

Today I came across a good advice from Will Critchlow that remided me how important Search Engine Optimization really is. To investigate problem (investing in SEO) further I wanted to know if SEO is still as important as it used to be. The simplest way to find that out is to research how often does search keyword ‘SEO’ appear in google:

Based on the image above interest rate in SEO has risen substantially, maybe even more when first signs of recession and credit crisis have emerged. That said I guess people do recognize the importance of SEO in rough times and want to invest in their online presence,…but still be careful as investing in SEO is not the most important thing (in crisis) if your business is not based online.

Nevertheless here is what Will Critchlow said in his blog post:

Thanks to Ciaran for pointing out a micro-site from FT.com about how to beat the feeling of impending financial doom pervading the world at the moment.

The answer, according to research by McKinsey showed that:

The companies who increased their spend in a recession were the only ones whose profits rose substantially when the economy recovered.

McGraw-Hill found (when analysing the aftermath of the early ’80s) found:

The sales of companies who had kept advertising during the 81-82 recession had risen 256% over those who had not.

As Ciaran points out, this makes a compelling case for investing in PPC just now. I also think there is a strong argument for working hard at your natural SEO at times like these as well. When your competitors pull back, you get more chance to shine – and this can become a self-reinforcing authority phenomenon which stays with you into the good times.

Now, it’s unsurprising that the FT (and indeed, Ciaran and I) think that people should keep spending on marketing their businesses, but the wealth of independent research that the FT has gathered (and their own behaviour – they are continuing to invest heavily in promoting their own business) is pretty compelling in my opinion.

It is still a bit of self-promotion from him but reminds me that SEO is definately sth I would consider if I had enough money to beat the cash crisis:)
